Archibald B. Steele and family papers, 1830-1897.

Papers of Archibald B. Steele and family consist of crop liens, land deeds, bills and receipts, and other financial documents. They include a work agreement with Madison Whittington and Elam Whittington, farm laborers hired to help gather in a crop; a deed describing Archibald B. Steele's bequeathal of a plot of land in Amite County to his wife, Lavicy Steele, and his children; a bill of sale documenting the purchase of land in Franklin County, Miss., by Andrew S. Steele from Henderson Whittington and Rachel Whittington; receipts for sharpening plows and other farm tool maintenance work; several certificates stating that Archibald B. Steele is a legal voter in Mississippi; and a citation for delinquent taxes owed by Andrew S. Steele. Also found among the papers is a letter, dated April 22, 1853, to Archibald Steele from one of his brothers, Samuel Steele, who writes of the welfare and present location of various family members, urges Steele to be born again, and describes his religious views pertaining to salvation. Included with the papers is a journal of Archibald B. Steele that records customers' purchases of cloth, clothing, tobacco, whiskey, and various dry goods at a general store. Entries in the journal show date of sale, the quantity and type of good purchased, and names of customers.
